Heather Morgan (who also scripted the film) portrays a dog-walker who has decided to stop talking and begins to act like the animals she tends to. The film is concerned mostly with her husband Peter (Lee Tergesen) and his attempts to help his wife. The supporting cast of this whimsical comedy includes Hank Azaria as Peter's most trusted friend, Vincent D'Onofrio as a psychiatrist who is in need of some mental health care, and Friends co-star Lisa Kudrow as a veterinarian. Kasia Adamik, the child of famed director Agnieszka Holland, helms this quirky comedy that played at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

A film kendőzetlenül mutatja be a faji megkülönböztetés összetettségét az amerikai társadalomban. A film a 9/11 utáni Los Angeles olvasztótégelyét veszi mikroszkóp alá, és több szemszögből is megvizsgálja a multietnikumú szereplőgárdát, ahogy ki és belépnek egymás életébe.
Paul Haggis, a film írója és rendezője, az Ütközések forgatókönyvéhez saját tapasztalataiból, félelmeiből és észrevételeiből merített ihletet. Haggis autóját pár éve fegyveresek rabolták el, mikor éppen egy Los Angeles-i videotékából jött ki. Ezután hazament, lecserélte a zárakat, és a fegyveres férfiakon kezdett el tűnődni. Vajon mióta ismerték egymást, mit csináltak szabadidejükben, vajon ők bűnözőknek tartották-e önmagukat és vajon hogyan tudják tetteiket igazolni önmaguk felé. Több évvel később úgy döntött, hogy történetüket papírra viszi, de mindezt az ő szemszögükből.
„Akkor már több mint huszonöt éve éltem Los Angelesben, és rendszeresen tanúja voltam ennek a sajátos, társadalmi osztályok és bőrszínek közti hadviselésnek - mondja Haggis. - Láttam a mindennapi életben előforduló diszkriminációt. Láttam, hogyan ésszerűsítjük és siklunk el felette, hogyan szervezzük életünket úgy, hogy ne kelljen ezzel foglalkozni, és hogyan próbáljuk letagadni még a probléma létezését is. Valójában azonban 9/11-et követően jöttem rá, hogy miként is írjam meg a forgatókönyvet. A film nem a társadalmi osztályokról vagy a faji ellentétekről szól, hanem az idegenektől való félelemről, az intoleranciáról és a részvétről. Arról, hogy mennyire utáljuk, ha mások bírálnak minket, ellenben mi könnyedén ítélünk meg másokat anélkül, hogy ezt az ellentmondást észrevennénk.”
„A film műfaja pontosan nem határozható meg - mondja Cathy Schulman, az Ütközések producere -, hiszen a valós életről szól. Egyszerre mese és moralitásjáték. Egy történet a reményről, amelyben a könnyedség, a csalódás, a tragédia, a szépség és a vígjáték elemei egyaránt megtalálhatók.”
Sandra Bullock szerint, aki Jean Cabotot, a Brendan Fraser által megformált nagyra törő államügyész magányos és gyanakvó feleségét alakítja, a film arra emlékeztet minket, hogy mennyire elszigetelt is a modern kori élet. „Az emberek manapság nagyon közönyösek - mondja Bullock. - Valamilyen katasztrófának kellene történnie ahhoz, hogy magunkhoz térjünk tompultságunkból. Túlságosan is elkényelmesedtünk.”
Jennifer Esposito - aki Riát, a Los Angeles-i nyomozót alakítja - véleménye szerint az Ütközések erőssége abban rejlik, hogy amíg egyik pillanatban megnevettet, a következőben már újból feszülten figyeljük, hogy mi történik. „Az egyik legemberközelibb forgatókönyv, amit valaha is olvastam - mondja a színésznő. - Erről a filmről mindenkinek lesz véleménye. Legyen az a vélemény akár jó, akár rossz, az emberek sokat fognak még beszélni erről a filmről.”
Ahogyan Haggis is megállapítja, az igazság gyakran fájdalmas. „Ez a film nem rossz emberekről, bűnözőkről szól. Ez a film jó embereket mutat be, olyan embereket, amilyeneket mi is ismerünk, akik hozzánk hasonlóan úgy gondolják, hogy ismerik önmagukat. Amikor pedig megpróbáltatás éri őket, rá kell döbbenniük, hogy ez közel sem igaz, és végül is egyik szereplő sem ússza meg sértetlenül.”
„Mindenki azt kapja, amit megérdemel - mondja Larenz Tate, aki Petert, az egyik autótolvajt játssza. - A fekete közösségtől a fehér és ázsiai közösségeken át egészen a latinókig, mindenki."
A Haggis által felvázolt, majd az általa és Moresco által megírt forgatókönyv olyan, egymás számára ismeretlen, Los Angelesben élő emberekről szól, akik élete a karácsonyt megelőző napokban fonódik össze. „Szerettem volna a sztereotípiákkal játszani egy kicsit, azzal, ahogyan a számunkra ismeretlen embereket egy pillantás alapján ítélünk meg” - mondja Haggis.
„Ha film közben nem ismersz egy kicsit is magadra, akkor nagy valószínűséggel hazudsz magadnak…” - mondja Sandra Bullock.
Annak ellenére, hogy tudták, egy faji megkülönböztetésről szóló filmhez nagyon nehéz lesz pénzügyi támogatást találni, Haggis és Moresco nem voltak hajlandóak kompromisszumokra. „Úgy gondoltuk, a pokolba mindenkivel, megírjuk, ahogyan mi szeretnénk, a film úgyse fog elkészülni - magyarázza Moresco. - Sok embertől kaptunk hasznos tanácsokat, és mi kitartóan egyre mélyebbre ástunk.”

Issues of race and gender cause a group of strangers in Los Angeles to physically and emotionally collide in this drama from director and screenwriter Paul Haggis. Graham (Don Cheadle) is a police detective whose brother is a street criminal, and it hurts him to know his mother cares more about his ne'er-do-well brother than him. Graham's partner is Ria (Jennifer Esposito), who is also his girlfriend, though she has begun to bristle at his emotional distance, as well as his occasional insensitivity over the fact he's African-American and she's Hispanic. Rick (Brendan Fraser) is an L.A. district attorney whose wife, Jean (Sandra Bullock), makes little secret of her fear and hatred of people unlike herself. Jean's worst imaginings about people of color are confirmed when her SUV is carjacked by two African-American men — Anthony (Chris Bridges, aka Ludacris), who dislikes white people as much as Jean hates blacks, and Peter (Larenz Tate), who is more open minded. Cameron (Terrence Howard) is a well-to-do African-American television producer with a beautiful wife, Christine (Thandie Newton). While coming home from a party, Cameron and Christine are pulled over by Officer Ryan (Matt Dillon), who subjects them to a humiliating interrogation (and her to an inappropriate search) while his new partner, Officer Hansen (Ryan Phillippe), looks on. Daniel (Michael Pena) is a hard-working locksmith and dedicated father who discovers that his looks don't lead many of his customers to trust him. A film kendőzetlenül mutatja be a faji megkülönböztetés összetettségét az amerikai társadalomban. A film a 9/11 utáni Los Angeles olvasztótégelyét veszi mikroszkóp alá, és több szemszögből is megvizsgálja a multietnikumú szereplőgárdát, ahogy ki és belépnek egymás életébe.
Paul Haggis, a film írója és rendezője, az Ütközések forgatókönyvéhez saját tapasztalataiból, félelmeiből és észrevételeiből merített ihletet. Haggis autóját pár éve fegyveresek rabolták el, mikor éppen egy Los Angeles-i videotékából jött ki. Ezután hazament, lecserélte a zárakat, és a fegyveres férfiakon kezdett el tűnődni. Vajon mióta ismerték egymást, mit csináltak szabadidejükben, vajon ők bűnözőknek tartották-e önmagukat és vajon hogyan tudják tetteiket igazolni önmaguk felé. Több évvel később úgy döntött, hogy történetüket papírra viszi, de mindezt az ő szemszögükből.
„Akkor már több mint huszonöt éve éltem Los Angelesben, és rendszeresen tanúja voltam ennek a sajátos, társadalmi osztályok és bőrszínek közti hadviselésnek - mondja Haggis. - Láttam a mindennapi életben előforduló diszkriminációt. Láttam, hogyan ésszerűsítjük és siklunk el felette, hogyan szervezzük életünket úgy, hogy ne kelljen ezzel foglalkozni, és hogyan próbáljuk letagadni még a probléma létezését is. Valójában azonban 9/11-et követően jöttem rá, hogy miként is írjam meg a forgatókönyvet. A film nem a társadalmi osztályokról vagy a faji ellentétekről szól, hanem az idegenektől való félelemről, az intoleranciáról és a részvétről. Arról, hogy mennyire utáljuk, ha mások bírálnak minket, ellenben mi könnyedén ítélünk meg másokat anélkül, hogy ezt az ellentmondást észrevennénk.”
„A film műfaja pontosan nem határozható meg - mondja Cathy Schulman, az Ütközések producere -, hiszen a valós életről szól. Egyszerre mese és moralitásjáték. Egy történet a reményről, amelyben a könnyedség, a csalódás, a tragédia, a szépség és a vígjáték elemei egyaránt megtalálhatók.”
Sandra Bullock szerint, aki Jean Cabotot, a Brendan Fraser által megformált nagyra törő államügyész magányos és gyanakvó feleségét alakítja, a film arra emlékeztet minket, hogy mennyire elszigetelt is a modern kori élet. „Az emberek manapság nagyon közönyösek - mondja Bullock. - Valamilyen katasztrófának kellene történnie ahhoz, hogy magunkhoz térjünk tompultságunkból. Túlságosan is elkényelmesedtünk.”
Jennifer Esposito - aki Riát, a Los Angeles-i nyomozót alakítja - véleménye szerint az Ütközések erőssége abban rejlik, hogy amíg egyik pillanatban megnevettet, a következőben már újból feszülten figyeljük, hogy mi történik. „Az egyik legemberközelibb forgatókönyv, amit valaha is olvastam - mondja a színésznő. - Erről a filmről mindenkinek lesz véleménye. Legyen az a vélemény akár jó, akár rossz, az emberek sokat fognak még beszélni erről a filmről.”
Ahogyan Haggis is megállapítja, az igazság gyakran fájdalmas. „Ez a film nem rossz emberekről, bűnözőkről szól. Ez a film jó embereket mutat be, olyan embereket, amilyeneket mi is ismerünk, akik hozzánk hasonlóan úgy gondolják, hogy ismerik önmagukat. A Haggis által felvázolt, majd az általa és Moresco által megírt forgatókönyv olyan, egymás számára ismeretlen, Los Angelesben élő emberekről szól, akik élete a karácsonyt megelőző napokban fonódik össze. „Szerettem volna a sztereotípiákkal játszani egy kicsit, azzal, ahogyan a számunkra ismeretlen embereket egy pillantás alapján ítélünk meg” - mondja Haggis.
„Ha film közben nem ismersz egy kicsit is magadra, akkor nagy valószínűséggel hazudsz magadnak…” - mondja Sandra Bullock.
Annak ellenére, hogy tudták, egy faji megkülönböztetésről szóló filmhez nagyon nehéz lesz pénzügyi támogatást találni, Haggis és Moresco nem voltak hajlandóak kompromisszumokra. „Úgy gondoltuk, a pokolba mindenkivel, megírjuk, ahogyan mi szeretnénk, a film úgyse fog elkészülni - magyarázza Moresco. - Sok embertől kaptunk hasznos tanácsokat, és mi kitartóan egyre mélyebbre ástunk.”

Issues of race and gender cause a group of strangers in Los Angeles to physically and emotionally collide in this drama from director and screenwriter Paul Haggis. Graham (Don Cheadle) is a police detective whose brother is a street criminal, and it hurts him to know his mother cares more about his ne'er-do-well brother than him. Graham's partner is Ria (Jennifer Esposito), who is also his girlfriend, though she has begun to bristle at his emotional distance, as well as his occasional insensitivity over the fact he's African-American and she's Hispanic. Rick (Brendan Fraser) is an L.A. district attorney whose wife, Jean (Sandra Bullock), makes little secret of her fear and hatred of people unlike herself. Jean's worst imaginings about people of color are confirmed when her SUV is carjacked by two African-American men — Anthony (Chris Bridges, aka Ludacris), who dislikes white people as much as Jean hates blacks, and Peter (Larenz Tate), who is more open minded. Cameron (Terrence Howard) is a well-to-do African-American television producer with a beautiful wife, Christine (Thandie Newton). While coming home from a party, Cameron and Christine are pulled over by Officer Ryan (Matt Dillon), who subjects them to a humiliating interrogation (and her to an inappropriate search) while his new partner, Officer Hansen (Ryan Phillippe), looks on. Daniel (Michael Pena) is a hard-working locksmith and dedicated father who discovers that his looks don't lead many of his customers to trust him. And Farhad (Shaun Toub) is a Middle Eastern shopkeeper who is so constantly threatened in the wake of the 9/11 attacks that he decided he needs a gun to defend his family. On the eve of her seventh birthday, little Amanda Meyer (Arlen Aguayo-Stewart) bears witness to the gory spectacle of her parents' murder. Evidently inspired by the 1967 Audrey Hepburn vehicle Wait Until Dark, the made-for-cable Dead Silent debuted over the Lifetime channel on March 27, 2000 — ironically the same night that ABC offered the premiere of the TV biopic The Audrey Hepburn Story.

Modern-day pirates and a disaster at sea set the stage for this action drama. The sister ship of the Titanic has been refurbished and restored to service for a final cruise, and a number of wealthy celebrities and socialites are on board for the occasion, including film star Gloria (Erika Eleniak) and her bodyguard Aaron (Dylan Walsh). However, Josef (Ice-T), a daring and ruthless thief, sees a golden opportunity and invades the ship with a crew of henchman, intending to steal the many valuables on board. An explosion tears into the ship while Josef and his men are looting the cabins, and it falls to Aaron to capture Josef and his men before the ship meets its fate at the bottom of the ocean. Final Voyage also stars Claudia Christian and Jonathan Fuller.

Like the 1959 theatrical feature of the same name, the two-part cable movie Journey to the Center of the Earth was loosely adapted from the Jules Verne novel (also of the same name). The first part of the TV version faithfully follows the chronology of the earlier film, with famed archeologist/explorer Professor Theodore Lytton (Treat Williams), his nephew, Jonas (Jeremy London), and adventurer-for-hire, McNiff (Hugh Keays-Byrne) embarking upon an expedition to the earth's core. The three men are following in the footsteps of Casper Hastings (Bryan Brown), who disappeared during a similar expedition several years earlier. Coming along for the ride is Casper's wife (or perhaps, widow), Alice Hastings (Tushka Bergen). Directed by George Miller (of The Man From Snowy River fame), Journey to the Center of the Earth made its first American TV appearance courtesy of cable's USA Network on September 14 and 15, 1999.

The dedicated and devoted Frances manages to get her boss back on track and off the booze, but it is really too late. Fitzgerald dies at age 44, with what may have been his greatest novel, The Last Tycoon, remaining unfinished. Set in Hollywood (but filmed in Toronto), Last Call debuted over the Showtime network on May 25, 2002

While the first Missing in Action film told of a rescue mission by ex-POW Colonel James Braddock (Chuck Norris), the second concerns his original stay in a Vietnamese prisoner camp. The camp is governed by the crazed Colonel Yin (Soon-Teck Oh), who forces the POW's to grow opium for French drug runners and tries to get them to admit to and sign a long list of war crimes. Braddock must escape the camp and liberate his fellow prisoners to have any hope of surviving. The third installment in the series, Braddock: Missing in Action 3, was released three years later.

A Passage to India, director David Lean's final film (for which he also received editing credit), breaks no new ground cinematically, but remains an exquisitely assembled harkback to such earlier Lean epics as Doctor Zhivago and Ryan's Daughter. Based on the novel by E. M. Forster, the film is set in colonial India in 1924. Adela Quested (Judy Davis), a sheltered, well-educated British woman, arrives in the town of Chandrapore, where she hopes to experience "the real India". Here she meets and befriends Dr. Aziz (Victor Banerjee), who, despite longstanding racial and social taboos, moves with relative ease and freedom amongst highborn British circles. Feeling comfortable with Adela, Aziz invites her to accompany him on a visit to the Marabar caves. Adela has previously exhibited bizarre, almost mystical behavior during other ventures into the Indian wilderness: this time, she emerges from the caves showing signs of injury and ill usage. To Aziz' horror, he is accused by Adela of raping her. Typically, the British ruling class rallies to Adela's defense, virtually convicting Aziz before the trial ever begins. Though he is eventually acquitted due to lack of evidence (in fact, director Lean never shows us what really happened), Aziz is ruined in the eyes of both the British and his own people-as is Adela. Woven into these proceedings is a subplot involving Adela's elderly travelling companion Mrs. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft), who through a series of plot twists too complex to describe here becomes a heroine of the Indian Independence movement. A Passage to India was nominated for several Academy Awards, scoring wins in the categories of Best Supporting Actress (Peggy Ashcroft) and Best Original Score (Maurice Jarre). A theatrical version of A Passage to India, written by Santha Rama Rau, was previously adapted for television by the BBC in the mid-1970s.

The thirties-odd woman has found success in the workplace, is respected among her peers, and is fairly confident in her own abilities — yet, she can't help but feel something is missing. When she arranges to interview a prospective student at least 15 years younger than she is, she's shocked to find out he is the spitting image of her high-school sweetheart, an artist who had died in a tragic car accident before they graduated. After the interview, Louise and Scott (Topher Grace) waste no time before getting romantically involved. Their motives aren't entirely clear — Louise may be longing for her former flame, while Scott could be trying to assure himself a position in the Ivy League by whatever means necessary — but that doesn't stop them. Elsewhere, Missy (Marcia Gay Harden), Louise's best friend from high school makes a play for Scott herself. Complicating issues further is the looming presence of Peter (Gabriel Byrne), Louise's ex-husband, and her recently sober brother (Paul Rudd).

Jackie Chan has often played a fish out of water, but he's rarely found himself so far upstream as in this comic adventure, in which he puts his fighting skills to the test in the Old West of the 1850s. Lo Fong (Roger Yuan), onetime captain of the Chinese Imperial Guard, has traded upholding the law for smuggling opium. Needing some operating capital, Lo Fong kidnaps the Emperor's daughter, Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Liu), and takes her to America. When the Emperor sends his best men to find her, Chon Wang (Chan), one of the Emperor's less distinguished guards, insists on joining them; he feels at fault for Lo Fong's capturing the Princess, and he wants to make amends. However, while the rescue party scours the West, Chon Wang gets separated from the group and soon becomes lost. When he crosses paths with Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson), a bright but arrogant train robber, the two become unlikely allies. While Shanghai Noon was billed as Jackie Chan's follow-up to Rush Hour, his first successful American-made feature, it was actually filmed in Canada, as was Chan's breakthrough film in America, the Hong Kong-backed Rumble in the Bronx.

In this adventure drama, four men passed over by the space program get one last chance to be heroes and live out their dreams. Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood), Hawk Hawkins (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry O'Neill (Donald Sutherland), and Tank Sullivan (James Garner) were top pilots within an elite Air Force squadron and on the fast track to becoming the first Americans in space in the early 1950s. However, when NASA was established, the pilots were cut out of the loop; Corvin went on to become an aerospace engineer, Hawkins continued on as a freelance pilot, O'Neill became an astrophysicist with a sideline in designing roller coasters, and Sullivan took up preaching as a Baptist minister. Years later, a Russian satellite's guidance system has started to malfunction, and it is expected to crash into the Earth within a matter of weeks. The system is identical to the one Corvin designed for Skylab, so NASA head Bob Gerson (James Cromwell) asks Corvin to help him with the emergency mission to repair the satellite. In this adventure drama, four men passed over by the space program get one last chance to be heroes and live out their dreams. Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood), Hawk Hawkins (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry O'Neill (Donald Sutherland), and Tank Sullivan (James Garner) were top pilots within an elite Air Force squadron and on the fast track to becoming the first Americans in space in the early 1950s. However, when NASA was established, the pilots were cut out of the loop; Corvin went on to become an aerospace engineer, Hawkins continued on as a freelance pilot, O'Neill became an astrophysicist with a sideline in designing roller coasters, and Sullivan took up preaching as a Baptist minister. Years later, a Russian satellite's guidance system has started to malfunction, and it is expected to crash into the Earth within a matter of weeks. The system is identical to the one Corvin designed for Skylab, so NASA head Bob Gerson (James Cromwell) asks Corvin to help him with the emergency mission to repair the satellite. But they reluctantly come to the rescue when Druish Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) is threatened by the evil Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), who wants to steal all of the air from her planet, Druidia. Trapped on a harsh desert world with Vespa and her robot chaperone, Dot Matrix (voice of Joan Rivers), Lone Starr and Barf are helpless to prevent Helmet from kidnapping the girl. But assistance arrives in the form of Yogurt (Brooks), a wizard who turns Lone Starr on to a mysterious power known as The Schwartz. Catching up with Helmet just as he's transforming his spaceship into a giant vacuum cleaner in orbit around Druidia, the reluctant heroes stage a dramatic showdown. Although it borrows most of its plot from the Star Wars series, Spaceballs also pokes fun at Star Trek, Snow White, and Planet of the Apes — as well as the entire videocassette and movie marketing industries. A space bum helps rescue a princess from an evil overlord with the help of a benevolent elder in this Star Wars send-up written and directed by Mel Brooks. Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog co-pilot, Barf the Mawg (John Candy), are content to scour the galaxy living the easy life. But they reluctantly come to the rescue when Druish Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) is threatened by the evil Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), who wants to steal all of the air from her planet, Druidia. Trapped on a harsh desert world with Vespa and her robot chaperone, Dot Matrix (voice of Joan Rivers), Lone Starr and Barf are helpless to prevent Helmet from kidnapping the girl. But assistance arrives in the form of Yogurt (Brooks), a wizard who turns Lone Starr on to a mysterious power known as The Schwartz. Catching up with Helmet just as he's transforming his spaceship into a giant vacuum cleaner in orbit around Druidia, the reluctant heroes stage a dramatic showdown. Although it borrows most of its plot from the Star Wars series, Spaceballs also pokes fun at Star Trek, Snow White, and Planet of the Apes — as well as the entire videocassette and movie marketing industries. The large supporting cast includes Dick Van Patten, Jim J. Bullock, and the voice of Dom DeLuise. John Hurt makes a cameo in a parody of the exploding chest scene he played in Alien

Still Crazy is a film that looks back at the "rock band" era of the 1970s. Brian Gibson, who has directed musical biographies on Josephine Baker and Tina Turner, sets his narrative on a rock group, Strange Fruit, who are attempting a comeback twenty years after a bolt of lightening literally ended their career in the late 1970's. When keyboard player Tony (Stephan Rea) runs into the son of their old festival promoter, he gets the idea he could perhaps bring the aging musicians together for a revival. He goes off to search for Karen (Juliet Aubre), the band's Girl Friday and often the butt of their various ego trips. Karen, who now lives alone with her daughter, thinks it's a great idea and they set off to locate the other members. Beano (Timothy Spall), the drummer, has barricaded himself away in a trailer in his mother's garden for fear of being caught by the taxman. Ray (Bill Nighy), the lead singer, lives in a luxurious country house (beyond his means) with his second wife; he's still in the music business and has released a solo record. Les (Jimmy Nail), a great bass guitarist, is happily married, and his only regret is that his music never found the following he would have liked. As for ex-roadie Hughie (Billy Connolly), the Fruits were always his boys, and he's ready to give up his stall at Camden market and follow the dream. He would also love to see guitarist Brian again, but Brian is nowhere to be found. Karen decides to hire a much younger musician, Luke, to replace him. The re-formed band go to Holland to play a few clubs on a warm-up tour. However, the youngest member of the band is stealing the show, particularly with the members of the opposite sex. Despite efforts to stay calm and professional, the band is falling into the old routine of bickering day by day as they get close to the big reunion concert. Super 8 Stories, which was shot using both Super-8 film and portable Digital Video cameras, offers a look at the band's fascinating 20-year history of battling political censorship and struggling to survive the violent upheavals in the Balkans, as they tour Europe in the wake of their acclaimed 2000 album Unza Unza Time. François Ozon's psychological thriller Swimming Pool stars Charlotte Rampling as a mystery writer. When Sarah (Rampling) is offered the use of her publisher's vacation home, she accepts the offer. The conservative, repressed Sarah clashes with the house's other inhabitant, Julie (Ludivine Sagnier), the uninhibited daughter of the publisher. Julie's promiscuous sex life intrigues Sarah and starts to lead to the thawing of the emotional deep-freeze between the two. The death of one of Julie's nightly assignations complicates their lives. Swimming Pool was screened in competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.

The death of a troubled teen throws a suburban neighborhood into chaos in this darkly satirical comedy. Dean (Jamie Bell) is a disaffected teenager living in a California suburb that's beautiful on the surface but populated by families who live emotionally vacant lives, with the parents often too wrapped up in their own problems to pay attention to their children. One day, Dean discovers his best (and only) friend, Troy (Josh Janowicz), has killed himself. While Troy's mother (Glenn Close) hasn't figured out her son is dead just yet, Dean opts not to tell her, and besides, his own parents (William Fichtner and Allison Janney) don't appear very concerned. Dean, however, does have reason to worry — Billy (Justin Chatwin), Lee (Lou Taylor Pucci), and Crystal (Camilla Belle) are three bullies who used to buy drugs from Troy, and they want Dean find Troy's remaining stash and give it to them. When Dean refuses to cooperate, the bullies decide to get tough and kidnap Dean's little brother; however, they end up taking the wrong child and Dean grudging finds himself trying to rescue a child he doesn't know. Meanwhile, as the adults in the neighborhood begin to emotionally implode, "the Chumscrubber" becomes a common presence in town — a comic book and video game character represented by a decapitated post-apocalyptic teenager who has become an unavoidable pop-culture icon. The Chumscrubber also features Ralph Fiennes, Carrie-Anne Moss, John Heard, and Rita Wilson.

This groundbreaking, darkly-comic horror film from director Joe Dante changed the look and feel of werewolf movies in ways light-years distant from Universal's horror classic The Wolf Man. The story begins with television reporter/anchor Karen White (Dee Wallace) taking part in a dangerous police operation intended to trap psychopath Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo). When confronted by Eddie face-to-face, she witnesses something horrifying enough to trigger selective amnesia. Plagued by a series of violent nightmares, Karen decides to admit herself to a posh recovery resort known only as "The Colony," run by her eccentric New Age therapist Dr. Wagner (Patrick MacNee), and brings along her husband Bill (Christopher Stone) for support. The night after they arrive, Karen and Bill are unnerved by eerie howling in the woods. Back in the city, Karen's coworkers Chris (Dennis Dugan) and Terry (Belinda Balaski) have been investigating Eddie's background after discovering that his body has disappeared from the morgue. Sifting through Eddie's possessions, they find a strange collection of artwork depicting wolf-like creatures, and decide to consult with Walter Paisley (Dick Miller, of course), the owner of an occult bookshop, on werewolf lore. Though he claims not to believe in the stuff he's selling, Paisley nevertheless convinces Chris to purchase a handful of silver bullets... just in case. Back at the colony, Dr. Wagner has organized a hunting party after hearing Karen's account of the nocturnal howling, but the men find nothing but a rabbit, which Bill is told to bring to the cabin of the sultry Marsha (Elizabeth Brooks) to prepare for dinner. After resisting Marsha's less-than-subtle sexual overtures, Bill is attacked by a wolf while returning to his cabin. The following moonlit night, the sleepless Bill wanders outside to find Marsha waiting and the two make love by the campfire, their bodies undergoing a frightening transformation. Just as Karen is beginning to suspect that her husband is hiding a secret far more threatening than marital infidelity, Chris and Terry have come to realize — too late, in Terry's case — that Eddie Quist is not only still alive, but not quite human... and he knows he's being followed. Chris arrives at the colony too late to save Terry, but manages to find Karen just as the colony's residents — all of whom are werewolves, including Dr. Wagner — are assembling to decide her fate. Dante fills his film with heartfelt homages to The Wolf Man and other classic horror movies, as well as a few clever visual puns and in-jokes from his tenure with Roger Corman, but never strays from the path to genuine horror, particularly when Rob Bottin's chilling monsters are onscreen.

Peter Weir follows up on his critically acclaimed masterpiece Picnic at Hanging Rock with this surrealist psychological drama. The film opens with a freak hailstorm in Australia's outback. Cut to David Burton (Richard Chamberlain), a well-to-do Sydney corporate lawyer plagued by visions of impending doom who is assigned to defend five accused of murdering a fellow Aborigine. The case itself proves to be mysterious — no exact cause of death can be determined by the pathologist, and the accused remain strangely tight-lipped about the whole affair. As his visions grow increasingly weird and intense, Burton sees in his dream one of the five Aborigines, Chris (David Gulpili of Walkabout fame), who is drenched and clutching a sacred rock. Burton's interest in the case slides into complete obsession, and he comes to believe that not only was the murder related to an underground urban tribe of Aborigines but that Australia is about to be decimated by a massive, apocalyptic tidal wave.

Lately, even that hasn't been doing too well, and the athletic staff led by Coach Winters (James Caan) are under considerable pressure by the administration and alumni to bring in a winning season. To do that, he has to recruit some able, promising young players out of high school. It's not too surprising to learn that he will do almost anything to get these kids, and its even less surprising that, as long as they keep producing on the field, he and the college will overlook almost any obnoxious behavior the boys can perpetrate to the limit of their ability.

However, John makes the mistake of falling head over heels for Claire (Rachel McAdams), the bride's sister, while Jeremy attracts the attentions of a woman he'd prefer not to be involved with, and soon their romantic peccadilloes get them in very hot water.
